Laboratory Manager, Physical & Funtional, Medical Device Testing

As laboratory manager, Mike is responsible for the daily and operational activities of the Smithers medical device functional and physical testing laboratory in Akron, Ohio. He played a significant role in establishing the North American laboratory as an expansion of Smithers’ existing medical device testing capabilities in the United Kingdom. He works directly with clients to understand their goals and ensure that all projects are on target, develops testing protocols, ensures regulatory compliance, and manages laboratory technicians.
 
He joined Smithers in 2015 and spent four years on the product testing team and one year specializing dynamic mechanical analysis before transitioning to his current role. As part of the product testing team, Mike focused on pressure, vibration, and temperature (PVT) testing on hoses and other products, as well as a variety of techniques used to evaluate components for performance and durability. Before working at Smithers, he was a research assistant at Akron General Medical Center, focusing on mechanical testing in the biomedical field.

Mike’s expertise covers medical and healthcare products as well as automotive and industrial components. He has significant experience with functional testing of drug delivery devices and 3D biomedical modeling. He works closely with clients and development teams to design and execute testing programs with the goal of ensuring product function, accelerating development, and increasing speed to market. 

Qualifications and Professional Accreditation

Mike holds a Master's of Science Degree in mechanical engineering and a Bachelor’s Degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio  He is a member of the Biomedical Engineering Society and CenTire. He was a podium presenter at the Midwest American Society of Biomedical Engineers Regional Conference in 2015, and his work has been published in the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine.
