Genetically modified (GM) feed, genetically altered by DNA gene engineering methods, requires a verification process to ensure compliance with local and national controls, importation requirements, and labeling regulations. Our multidisciplinary team offers a broad understanding of the regulatory landscape and 12 years of experience in GM feed testing of corn (maize), soybean, and other components in live catfish feeding studies (and formerly in poultry feeding studies). When you choose Smithers to manage your feeding studies, our customer service and test team collaborate with you to optimize the testing plan, incorporate GLP/non-GLP processes as needed, discuss the timeline and project deliverables, and manage the diet preparation steps.

We test each GM plant-based feed against an unmodified isogenic control feed over the course of 8 weeks and follow the animal growth, survival, feed consumption, and feed conversion ratio. Our Channel Catfish studies also include daily monitoring of water quality parameters to ensure they fall within acceptable limits. Upon completion of each in-life study, our team conducts statistical analysis on the resulting data and provides a detailed report to the client after approximately 6 weeks. Our testing protocol is designed to help inspire consumer confidence in animal-derived products and ensure that your GM animal feeds meet your animal’s needs and the regulatory controls.
