Endocrine Disruptors – ONE Conference Regulatory and Testing Updates

Smithers Ecotoxicologists attended the 2022 ONE Health, Environment, Society Conference, held in Brussels and online, June 21-24. Session topics included:
  • Environmental risk assessment of pesticides: transitioning to a systems-based approach
  • Endocrine disruptors: exploring present challenges and future developments
  • New approach methodologies: moving beyond animal testing
Speakers from industry, academia, regulatory bodies, and non-government organizations presented platforms, posters, and panel discussions that included in-person and virtual audience participation.

Conference highlights:
  • Changes in regulatory requirements specific to the investigation of potential endocrine disruptor activity under REACH registration are ongoing and tentatively scheduled for completion in late 2022/early 2023.
  • Industry participants provided commentary on existing guidelines and overall assessment strategies (i.e., weight of evidence (WoE) is a robust approach).
  • Use of hypothesis-based approaches and modeling discussed as alternative testing methods to minimize animal usage.
  • Use of new approach methodologies (NAMs), i.e., in vitro, in silica methods) within the regulatory risk assessments should be considered going forward. However, there is still uncertainty regarding use and confidence in results from these test types (reproducibility, validity).
Smithers has extensive experience in endocrine testing, including long-term fish studies and amphibian work. Our experts can work with you to develop a tailored testing strategy.
