Heavy metals are naturally occurring in water, air, and soil. Cannabis is highly effective at absorbing and retaining chemicals and elements like heavy metals from its environment. Whether it’s grown indoors or outdoors, cannabis can collect heavy metals throughout the cultivation process as it takes in nutrients from the soil and water. In turn, these elements can be passed from the plant to the consumer.

Smithers utilize the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) to perform precision-level heavy metals testing for arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, and chromium as mandated by the Illinois Department of Agriculture. We also have the capacity to analyze for other elements of concern such cobalt, copper, manganese, etc.
