Cannabinoids are compounds that are extracted from plant material using solvents such as Ethanol, Butane, Hexane, and Isopropanol. Post-extraction, these solvents are removed through various processes such as distillation and evaporation – both processes are dependent on time and temperature. If the evaporation time is too short, or the temperature is too low, some residual solvent from the extraction process can remain in the final product. In IL, the Department of Agriculture provides a list of solvents with action limits for both inhaled and infused products.  At Smithers, experts develop, verify, and apply gas chromatography methods tailored to the IL solvents list that are adapted from time-tested, validated methods used in the pharmaceutical industry.
