A paper sample is first soaked in paraffin. The sample is then clamped in position and the Profiler applies an increasing vacuum which unblocks the pores in size order starting with the largest first. From the differential flow rate and pressure difference a distribution of the largest pore sizes is determined.

Typical applications include the analysis of medical papers and cigarette papers and other 'breathable' membranes.
