Single-use plastic packaging use is projected at 40.4 million tons in 2020 and is forecast to grow during 2020–2025 at a CAGR of 3.7% to 48.5 million tons in 2025.

The definition of single-use plastic packaging has a narrower scope compared to the EU Directive definitions. Behavioural considerations are not included; e.g., if a plastic can be recycled then it’s not a single-use material. For this report, the general definition of a single-use plastic packaging material is a packaging or container that can’t be readily recycled at a materials recycling plant or easily be dropped off at a public locale for recycling at another facility.
