TGA studies include reviewing the bulk composition of materials – including low molecular weight species, polymers, carbonaceous materials and inorganic materials.

What is TGA Used For?

TGA testing is useful for quality control, material and process development activities, failure investigations and deformulation of polymer materials.

How Smithers Performs TGA

TGA testing is performed on a small sample of material (typically in the region of 5mg), which is heated under atmospheres of nitrogen and air to a predetermined temperature.

The change in weight of the sample is monitored continuously against temperature and time. Once the analysis is complete, our experts will review and interpret the resulting thermogram (such as the graph below) and draw conclusions about the materials bulk composition, as well as physical and chemical properties.

Thermogravimetric Standards Smithers Test To

In addition to our in-house and bespoke test methods, Smithers can perform thermogravimetric analysis according to the following (but not limited to) published standards.
  • BS EN ISO 11358 Thermogravimetry of polymers
  • ASTM E1131 Standard test for compositional analysis by thermogravimetry

About our TGA Capabilities

Our rubber and plastic testing laboratories have TGA instruments which are calibrated up to 800°C and heating rates from 0.1°C/min up to 500°C/min. Auto-sampling technology provides an automated means of loading and unloading samples, allowing the ability to run many samples in a shorter period of time for larger projects.
