Summary

The test methods in this standard are used to produce control data of tensile properties in plastic materials. The use of this particular test method is provisional based on the material specifications which may allow for some procedural modifications that must take precedence when adhering to the material specification.

Test Details

This test method is used to determine the tensile properties of unreinforced and reinforced plastics when tested under specific conditions of pretreatment, temperature, humidity, and testing machine speed. It covers the testing of materials of any thickness up to 14 mm (0.55 in.). The data obtained from this method:

  • Are relevant and appropriate for use in engineering design
  • Should recognize the values stated in SI units as standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.

Types of products / materials generally tested in our laboratory (common uses):

  • Unreinforced and reinforced plastic materials
  • Phenolic molded resin or laminated materials (only when not used in electrical insulation, see ASTM D229)

*Please Note: The information outlined above is to be used as reference ASTM D638 Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Plastics. Please refer to ASTM International for full details and the most current revision.
